My work is inspired by the early folk and art traditions of western North Carolina. For over 30 years I have been interested in the forms, glazes and methods of manufacture distinctive to this region.
Early utilitarian crock and jug forms as well as early art ware shapes are evident in my work. I prepare my glazes from locally dug materials as they were 150 years ago. While my pottery reflects the early local traditions, it is not copies or reproductions.
Many examples have detailed incised scenes of mountain farms, people and animals. I have always loved to draw and this is a natural approach for me. I also produce one-of-a-kind folk sculptures including pig riders, Noah's Arks, face jugs and 'possums'. Once a year, one firing is limited to crystalline glazed wares—a tribute to Pisgah Forest Pottery—the first Southern pottery to develop these unique glazes. |
